Meesha Shafi Case Takes New Turn

Meesha Shafi case takes new turn as Ali Zafar also comes into the foray. But more importantly, FIA has become active too. Meesha Shafi and Ali Zafar are at loggerheads for quite sometime now and they are providing ample spice to the newspapers, social media, and the blogs.

Meesha Shafi along with actor-host Iffat Omar, Leena Ghani, Fariha Ayub, Maham Javaid, Ali Gul, Haseemuz Zaman Khan, Humna Raza and Syed Faizan Raza have been booked under section 20 (1) of Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 and R/W 109-PPC. FIA initiated criminal proceedings against women. Some people like Reema Omar are saying that the criminal justice system that historically failed women seeking accountability will now also be used to silence them.

UN Human Rights Committee: “States should consider decriminalization of defamation and, in any case, application of criminal law should only be countenanced in the most serious of cases and imprisonment is never an appropriate penalty”. S. 20 PECA carries up to 3 yrs imprisonment. In its assessment of Pakistan’s compliance with the ICCPR, UN Human Rights Committee expressed concern that defamation is criminalised in the country. It specifically asked Pakistan to “decriminalize defamation, and ensure that imprisonment is never a punishment for defamation.”

Iffat Omar appeared but did not record her statement with the request to give her time, but despite repeated requests failed to record her statement. Ms Omer, let’s talk facts that are mentioned in this very news. These people are exploiting the issue in the name of liberalism and feminism. Silencing people through intimidation is no way to build a trust in the system. Even if allegations of harassment were not proven & no victim came out to provide proof, there is still a chance that they are right. They just don’t have trust in the system. Not everyone is youthia.

By same logic “there’s still a chance” that allegations were malicious, motivated by ill intent and as investigation says baseless? Do you know why her case was dismissed by the ombudsperson plus the high court? Sorry to say but both parties using their right to fight. She filed a case and lost it. I do not know who is right and who is wrong. And He used his right and filed a defamation case which got the weight right after She lost the harassment case.

But why didn’t the ladies appear before the court to present their defence, failing which granted a cause of criminal proceedings against them? What’s wrong to criminalize those mocking individuals and law. And for UN Human rights Committee, oh come on, they are just instruments of powerful states and b4 pointing finger to a minor personal issues, it must wide open eyes to Kashmir & Palestine. Actions have consequences. Deal with it.
