What’s happening right now in Washington DC is not an unfamiliar sight for most of the third world and many in first world countries. It’s also not a new thing in US though getting into Capitol Hill is certainly a new occurrence but then American democracy is strong enough for capital hill storming and they will come out of stronger than ever before.
It’s funny to see how people in Pakistan expecting a Martial Law in America given they have seen the similar drill happening multiple times in Pakistan over the years. Crowd storms the parliament house and other government buildings, military intervenes, ‘Aziz Hum Watno‘ happens, and then the army chief becomes administrator promising calm, relief, and return to ‘true’ democracy as soon as possible. Then we see decades of military rule followed by a weak and compromised political government trying to appease the military and cleaning up the mess at the same time and then failing at both.
That’s not going to happen in US if you are thinking or hoping for that. I can tell you with certainty that no coup is going to happen in US and they will not be intimidated” or kept from its duty by “thugs, mobs or threats.” They will not bow to lawlessness or intimidation. US administration has in fact recovered from the initial shock and they are back at their posts. They are going to discharge their duty under the Constitution and for their nation. And they are going to do it tonight.
Police is leading the charge and defending the installations. US military is always there but on the beck and call of administration. Except these few hundred of protestors, everything is calm in Washington. Mob is there but is largely controlled now. They tired to disrupt US democracy and they failed. Americans as a nation was founded precisely so that the free choice of people is what shapes democracy, not fear, not force, but the peaceful expression of the popular will.
Former President Barack Obama issued a statement on Wednesday’s riots at the Capitol, arguing that Republican leaders now have a choice between “stoking the raging fires” or taking “the first steps toward extinguishing the flames. History will rightly remember today’s violence at the Capitol, incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election, as a moment of great dishonor and shame for our nation,” Obama wrote. “But we’d be kidding ourselves if we treated it as a total surprise.” He continued, “For two months now, a political party and its accompanying media ecosystem has too often been unwilling to tell their followers the truth… Their fantasy narrative has spiraled further and further from reality, and it builds upon years of sown resentments. Now we’re seeing the consequences, whipped up into a violent crescendo.”
There is no conspiracy behind it my dear fellow Pakistanis. Unlike what happens in Pakistan, there is no establishment behind these mobs in US. There is no Qadri and there is no Imran there. It’s all a disappointed and angry mob likely incited by Trump’s angry social media ramblings about election results. It’s fleeting there. Yes embarrassing for sure but part of the game.
